２００４年に発見されるまで飼い主でさえも羊だとわからなかったほど毛が伸びていたニュージーランドのシュレック・ザ・シープ。

それを聞いてある根本的な問いが湧いてきた。

 

「羊の毛って刈り取られなかった場合、無限に伸びるわけ？」

 

 

そうだとしたらそれって羊の健康にはどうなんだろう。これってもしかして繊維界の革命？

 

そんな差し迫った疑問に答えてもらうためアメリカのウィスコンシン州マディソン市のウィスコンシン大学の羊学の権威、デイブ・トーマス氏に話をきくことにした。

 

さっそくですが、羊の毛って刈り取らないとずっと伸び続けるんですか？

 

 

メリノ種のような家畜用の羊の場合、答えはYESだね。

 

ということは家畜用の羊はそのように進化したってことなんですか？

 

 

そのとおり。ビッグホーンのような野生の羊は一年に一度毛が自然に抜けるね。肉用の羊の中には毛が抜けるものもいるけどたいていの羊の毛は一年中伸び続けるよ。

 

シュレックは明らかに特別ですよね？

 

 

あんなに長くなるのは珍しいことだよ。家庭で飼っている羊でたまに刈り取ってくれる人が見つからなくて伸びっぱなしのは見たことがあるけどそれでも２、３年だよね。

 

健康に支障はあるんでしょうか？

 

 

あまりに長いと夏に熱中症になるかもしれないね。あと移動の問題も出てくる。一度ひっくり返ると起き上がれないなんてこともあるかもしれないし、下手すればそれで死んでしまうことも。

 

それは結構タフですね。視力に影響はあるんでしょうか？

 

 

それは私たちが呼ぶところの「羊目」だね。実際に障害になったりするんだ、長くなりすぎると。

 

たいていの羊は毛を刈り取られるのを嫌うものなんでしょうか？

 

 

人間が歯医者に行くのと同じように毛を刈り取られるのが好きな羊はいないよね。毛を刈り取ることで得られるメリットをわかっていればいいのにね！面白いのは若い羊は蹴ったり暴れたりするけど年を取った羊はわりと落ち着いていることなんだ笑。わかるんだろうね、そんなに大したことないって笑。良い刈り取り人は３、４分でまったく痛みなしにうまく刈ってくれるしね。３http://www.sunnyskyz.com/uploads/2015/08/30dam-shrek-4.jpg

 

 

すっかりきれいに刈り取られたシュレック・ザ・シープを見ているとやっぱり羊はちゃんと毛を刈ってもらったほうが幸せなんじゃないかとしみじみ思った。
