北アイルランドはアイルランドではない！
この記事は。前回アイルランド生活〜アイルランドの最先端へ! ＠ポーランド人のハウスメイトと珍道中の続きになります。
デリーの歴史を振り返りつつ、その歴史を垣間見た私たち。ようやく最終目的地のベルファストへと向かいました。パーキングに車を停めて街の散策へと出る私たち。と、ここでラジオも聴ける車用のオーディオシステムを外して見えない位置に移動させるハウスメイト。「？」と思いつつその理由を聞くと、「ベルファストでアイルランドナンバーの車停めてると、狙われやすいから。」と。
そう、アイルランドと北アイルランドといえば、割と近年まで宗教戦争を続けていた国。今は休戦協定を結んでいるので街は穏やかですし、外国人が観光するには全く問題ない状態ですが、地元の人たちは未だにそのわだかまりを引きずっている人も少なくないそうで。
アイルランド人にとって北アイルランドは、未だ穏やかな場所とは言えないのだそうです。ハウスメイトはポーランド人ですが、車はアイルランドナンバー。車上荒らしなどのターゲットにならぬよう、少しでも高額と思われるようなものは外から見えないようにする、防犯対策だったのでした。
さて、そんなベルファストの街を歩いてみると。なんと言うか、建物がずどーんと重厚感のある作りで。イギリスの街並みに近い雰囲気なのです。なるほど、
やはりここは北アイルランドであって、アイルランドではないんだな。
なんてことを改めて感じました。そう、書き忘れてましたが、ご存知のとおり北アイルランドはイギリスの一部であって、アイルランドではないのです。なので、北アイルランド内では、お金もユーロではなくポンド。うっかり忘れてしまいがちですが、ユーロはそのまま使えないので要注意です。
しかも、ここで初めて知ったのですが、イギリスのポンド、イギリス内でもエリアによって違う絵柄なのだそうです。おそらく、私たちに馴染みがあるポンドといえばエリザベス女王が描かれているものかと思いますが、北アイルランドのポンドはこんな絵柄。
話が脱線しますが、イギリス本土でもこのポンドは使えるとのことで、実際に使ってみたところ、店員さんは灯りに透かして見たりしてて、
私、若干疑われたらしい。。
いやでも、ちゃんとお金ですし正真正銘のポンドですから、きちんと受け取ってくれましたけどね。
さて、話は戻りますが、ベルファストでハウスメイトが一軒の有名なパブに連れて行ってくれました。その名も「CROWN」。このパブは、プロテスタント教徒の男性とカトリック教徒の女性が結婚して始めたパブだそうで、開業にあたりお店の名前を決めるのに揉めに揉めたそう。結局、旦那さんがつけたがっていた、イギリスの象徴である「CROWN」という名前にしたものの、奥さんは納得がいかず。そこで奥さん、
入口の床に王冠の絵を入れて、踏み絵状態の入口にしてしまったのでした！
宗教問題が根本にあるとはいえ、ちょっとユーモアがあるストーリーで笑えました（笑）。
そんなこんなで、北アイルランドを満喫した旅。貴重な経験やいろいろな思い出を作って、我が家に帰宅したのでした。この旅を提案してくれて、「行きたいとこ連れてくよ！」と、ずっと車を運転し続けてくれたハウスメイトには、本当に感謝です！
