アメリカの１１月のイベント『ＴＨＡＮＫＳＧＩＶＩＮＧ』学校やお店は休日とするところが多く、多くの州は4連休の感謝祭休日を実施しているところが多い！
私も、旦那も今回４連休もらいました。今回11月26.27.28.29日の４連休。我が家では家族というか、子供がいませんので、去年は、友人の自宅に招いてもらって感謝祭を行いました。特に、家族と離れていたり、単身赴任で周りに家族がいない人たちは職場の上司の家に招待されることが多いです。また地域や人種によっても食べるものが違うようです。アメリカ在住の韓国人の方々は、特に家でチキン（ターキー）と、キムチやナムルなど揃えて食べているそうですし、メキシカンの友人もターキーと、メキシコ料理で感謝祭をしているそうです。私の参加した時は、ターキーとＢＢＱでした。
また友人の奥さんやガールフレンドが１品持ち寄ってケーキやパイ、サラダなどを持ってきてくれていました。女子会みたいな感じで楽しかったです。
学校の授業でもこのイベントについて勉強しました。この辺の祝日の歴史の授業が私的に好きではないので、詳しく説明ができませんが、毎年１１月の第四木曜日、大抵は（ターキーチキン、ポテト、コーン、かぼちゃ、クランベリー）を用意するのが昔からの伝統的な食事のセットアップです。
各教会では、この日に無料の食事を配布のサービスがありますので、そこに集まっている人も多いそうですよ。確かに、日本だと家族で集まって伝統的な料理を食べると言った習慣は特にないような気がしますね。あえて言えば、年末に地元へ帰って年越しそばを家族で食べる？そんな感覚ですかね。一方、インディアン達にとっては、この感謝祭は、この日をきっかけに、先祖や知識や土地がヨーロッパからの移民の人々に奪われた、「大量虐殺の始まりの日」と記している。と書いてあります。アメリカの教科書にはいろいろ家の作り方や食物の栽培の仕方、魚の収穫などを伝えた日としていますが、それを逆に奪われた日と記されていますね。 ん、、、、なかなか深い意味のあるイベントでございます。
