イギリスで£５０出したら大騒ぎ？
イギリス紙幣で不思議なのは発行されているのは£５、£１０、£２０、£５０の紙幣ですが、£５０はほぼ街なかでは見かけないんです。恐らく日本の２千円札くらいのレア度。皆さんそれ以下のお札を使っています。高額紙幣を持ち歩くのがおっかないんでしょうか？
それゆえ旅行者が£５０に出くわすことは無いのですが、唯一あり得るのは、両替所で£５０を受け取り、一万円札の感覚でレジで差し出すと大変なことになります。まずマネージャーを呼び、照明にかざして透かしを確認したり、こすったり、紙幣に落書き（サインみたいな？）してみたりとちょっとした騒ぎに。そのくらいイギリス人は£５０札は大金で普段使用しないんです。
今回イギリス旅行を決めた理由のひとつに、戸棚からここ数年の円高で使えずしまっていたポンド紙幣がある！と思って見てみたら、なんと£８５０も眠っていたのでした。しかし紙幣がもう流通していない古いデザインで、イギリスの場合はイングランド銀行に持っていて現在の紙幣と両替してもらわないと使用できないんです。
イングランド銀行で両替してもらう時、使うのに勇気がいる£５０のことは知っていながらも、全部£２０札にしてもらうのもかさばって保管に不便かと思い£５０札も入れて両替してもらいました。
しかしあっという間に£２０札は使ってしまい、あるチェーン店で£５０札を出してみました。案の定透かしたりこすったり。まあでも正真正銘イングランド銀行からもらってきたお札ですから私は胸を張ってその様子を眺めていました。特に文句も言われず£５０は受け取られお釣りをもらうことができました。
イギリスの紙幣にも色々ある
ところで、今回のイギリス旅行ではスコットランド人の友人とホテルに泊まる際、私がホテル代を払ったので立て替え分をくれたのですがそれがスコットランド紙幣。
そう、イギリスではイングランド銀行から発行された紙幣、そしてスコットランドの銀行から発行されている紙幣、そして北アイルランドの銀行から発行されている紙幣と何種類もあるんです。普段はそれぞれの地域で使っているだけなので通用しますが、このようにスコットランド紙幣がイングランドの店頭に来た時、本来ならば同じ発行/流通を許された紙幣なのですから受け取り拒否はダメなのですが、お店で私がそのもらったスコットランドの紙幣を出すと、
「申し訳ないんだけど、このお金は受け取れないんです。他のお札にしてください」というんですよ…。
するとそばにいたスコットランド人の友人がすぐさまかみつき、
「使用が許されているんだから出して何が悪い、受け取り拒否とはスコットランド人への差別か！店側がそうしているのか！」
みたいな感じでまくし立てました。がしかし向こうも折れず、受け取れないとのこと。しかたなくまた£５０紙幣を出すとそれは受け取ってくれました。
ちなみにイングランド銀行発行の紙幣はスコットランドや北アイルランドでは普通に使用できます、が、おつりが現地の紙幣になりますので、そちら方面へ旅行の際にはお気をつけください。
